What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a site stores on your device so it can remember something between pages or between visits. Some are set by this site. Others are set by third parties whose code runs on these pages, such as an analytics or advertising provider.
The cookies used here
- Essential. These keep the site working: page caching, security checks on the contact form, and blocking abusive traffic. They cannot be switched off without breaking the site.
- Analytics. Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, tells me which guides are read and how people move between them. It is read in aggregate and is not used to identify you.
- Advertising. Google and its advertising partners set cookies to select ads and to limit how often the same ad is shown to you.
Third-party cookies
The analytics and advertising cookies above are set by Google, not by this site, and I do not control what they contain or how long they last. They are governed by Google policies, and Google publishes its own controls for how your data is used and how ads are personalized.
Turning cookies off
You are in control. Every major browser lets you view stored cookies, delete them, and block new ones, either everywhere or site by site, from its settings. Personalized advertising can also be turned off through Google ad settings and through industry opt-out tools. Blocking essential cookies will break parts of this site; blocking the rest will not.
Changes
If the tools on this site change, this page changes with them and the date at the top moves. Questions go through the contact form.
